Things to do and see around Lesvos island
I’ve always heard much about various activities and things to see around Lesvos island but until recently I didn’t really have the chance to visit this beautiful place, although me and my wife both love traveling and have been to a great deal of destinations around Greece. The reason why we delayed our visit to Lesvos was more or less practical.
Since it is one of the largest islands in Greece, it’s better to visit it with your car or just rent one, but since both my wife and I do not drive, we always postponed it for later. A few weeks ago we decided to go there with some family friends of ours, so moving was not a problem for us anymore since our friends drive and bought their car with them.
What Lesvos has to offer to travelers
Lesvos island is indeed the third largest island in Greece after Crete and Evia. It’s the homeland of Sappho the well know ancient lesbian poet. In fact the word “lesbian” came from Lesvos island and because of Sappho who was born there, also took its sexual meaning. Besides Sappho many other ancient Greek poets and artists were born and lived in the island, that is situated on the North-east part of the Aegean sea, just a few miles from the Turkish coasts.
Nature has been very generous to Lesbos island. The place is full of olive groves as far as your eye can see and pine forests in non-populated and remote areas. Of course the island is surrounded by many great and idyllic beaches, that unfortunately we had not enough time to enjoy since we stayed in Lesbos only for a weekend. All these are the main characteristic of the natural environment of the island.
The history of the place and interesting sights
The glamor of the past is revealed at the important archaeological sites, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman monuments, historic monasteries and old churches, splendid examples of Greek traditional architecture. The image of Lesbos is completed with its famous hot springs and hiking trails.
In fact Lesvos (or Lesbos) is a big place and offers many interesting things to see and visit. From Mytilene, the capital city of the island on the east coast, to Sigri, the picturesque seaside village on the western end, and Molyvos and Vafios, a traditional town and village with their romantic atmosphere, to Plomari, well known for the ouzo that is produced there at the southern tip of Lesvos. All these places really move you, they captivate you and they excite people who visit them.
Local fresh and quality products
To tell you the truth, me and my wife really love food and drink. That’s why we always look for local products to taste and bring back home as gifts. The island is famous for its ouzo as I mentioned before, olives and olive oil, cheese and seafood.
We really had a great time and food during our visit, and actually there are dozens of such taverns and restaurants offering local delicacies in every single town and village in Lesvos island. What I enjoyed most was the honey that is produced on the island. You can literally find it at every point of the island and you can try flavors like pine or flower honey.
One of the characteristics of the island are also the women’s cooperatives that operate there. They are active in many towns and villages around Lesbos and beyond the unique artifacts, the also offer local traditional recipes, sweets, chestnuts, pies, jams, liqueurs and many other “pure”, local products they produce and sell. Don’t buy ouzo and olive oil there, since you can find it even in quite a lot supermarkets all around Greece, but buy some honey, Kalloni sardines, ladotyri and other types of local cheese since there are much more difficult to find away from the island.
A weekend in Lesvos is certainly not enough to enjoy the island
The enchanting aspects of Lesvos Island are many, and it is certain that a single visit to the island will not be enough for those who wish to experience all the beauties, enjoy all the tastes and all the aromas, to discover all its secrets. I also have been doing research on a method of weight loss, which I decided to have surgery for. It wasn’t enough for us, I can tell you that for sure… I’m looking forward to visiting this great place again soon.
