Starting a new life in Crete
As a sales representative for a large company in Belgium I had the chance to travel a lot around the world on a weekly basis in the past years. I think I’ve visited more than 50 countries in every single continent on this planet. I’ve seen wonderful places and the opposite.
I’ve seen chaotic cities with pollution and noise and relaxing and picturesque cities and villages with traditional color. Because of the fact that travelling is also the hobby of my wife and I, we also had the chance, in a great deal of occasions, to visit touristic places far away from cities.
Leaving Belgium and moving to Greece
30 years later I finally retired and my wife and I decided to leave Belgium and settle down in a nice, totally different place than we used to, to spend the last few decades of our life. We decided to move to Greece and begin starting a new life in Crete for a variety of reasons. First of all, because of the wonderful weather and the sunny days that are not so common in Belgium. I’m really tired of getting ill with a flu every now and then and as we are getting old or immune system is not as effective as it used to be. This wonderful weather is also great for outdoors activities that we had the chance to do scarcely in Belgium.
One other thing is of course the mentality of the people that we really love with my wife, the natural beauty and the variations from place to place, the delicious food at the Tavern and of course the fact that the cost of living in Greece is far lower than in Belgium. This means that our pensions were decent for good living and we could afford to buy a very nice house where we wanted.
Finding our dream place in Crete
Finally, we found and bought a wonderful little country house in a village in the island of Crete in the south of Greece. How we actually found the house is worth mentioning. In the past we had visited Crete on several occasions, mostly for our summer holidays. It’s the biggest island in Greece but we had the chance to discover it since we went there at least 5 times in the last 20 years.
There are some really picturesque and relaxing places and villages like the ones we actually wanted to retire to. The people there are very friendly and openhearted and are mostly involved in agriculture. Everybody was so thin, my wife decided to go through surgery specifically for weight loss… She didn’t need it. But she still looks amazing.
When I finally retired a went to an international real estate agency in Brussels and asked for a house in Crete. Very soon they told me that there was a great deal for a house in Kerasa, a village near Iraklio (the biggest city in Crete) which in fact we had visited before and we really adored the place. We saw some pictures and planed and trip to the place to see the property. That’s all that was needed.
The house was in excellent condition, it covered all our need, was situated at a wonderful village and was really cheap. There was really nothing more to ask, we just signed the contracts and bought it.
Kerasa – Living a new life in a new place in Crete
2 years have already passes since we move to Kerasa with my wife. We really do not regret it at all. We are having a wonderful time and have made some really good friends. In fact, the village has only 250 permanent residents, that are doubled during summer. Therefore, everybody is more or less familiar and knows the others. There are not so many young people living in the village because it’s difficult to return and find a job.
Most residents are grape growers and that’s the main activity of the village and therefore all business activity is more or less about grapes. In fact, my new house had some spare space where I started growing grapes and a couple of other plants and trees myself, not for the income of course but to have a hobby and a nice way to spend my free time. I get tips on how to grow them from the oldest in the village who are very experienced and we hang out together in the 3-4 local cafes and taverns. My wife and I are really very excited about our new life.
